At the Invitational Reading, I read an abbreviated version of this essay and was recognized with two awards, one of them for Three Five Oh Six. The Mary Clearman Blew Undergraduate Writing Prize was established in spring of 2020 by Mary Clearman Blew, a prolific writer and winner of several awards as well as professor emerita of UI.
"In honor of Mary Clearman Blew's 80th birthday--as well as her literary productivity and distinguished career as a mentor of writers--she and her family and friends are establishing an annual award in her name for undergraduate writers at the University of Idaho." Of my entry, a contest judge noted, "Three Five Oh Six is a deftly constructed essay that weaves together (and deconstructs) the intersection of family, place, and the past. The prose is sure-footed and exacting, and it glimmers with a poet's sense of both compression and mystery. A litmus test for all writing might be: Does this make me want to put down what I'm reading and write? Does this make me want to turn the page? In both cases, the answer is a resounding Yes. This writer plunges headfirst into the contradictions that make us human. True talent on the page!" Read Three Five Oh Six here.
