Tackling the broad idea of the abject and how it is present in comic books and other literature, this paper focuses on how this presence affects change in society. It begins by defining abjection and how many social outcasts have been seen through this lens, beginning with Beowulf and appearing throughout the history of literature. Seeing these connections and the influences of culture at the time of their writing emphasizes context for modern day analysis of comic books, within a increasingly global society, and which reveals sexism, ageism, and racism. Analyzing the presence of this abjection in literature and comic books gives us a place to see discrimination, and can help us put into perspective relevant struggles we see today. This paper was presented at the 2019 Northwest Undergraduate Conference in the Humanities and nominated for an award. This work is still in progress as of winter 2019.
